Auslan interpreting provides communication access to people whose primary language is Auslan. Can be available as part of your NDIS package.
What is Auslan interpreting?
Auslan is the sign language of the Deaf community in Australia. Auslan interpreters are qualified to convey meaning between English and Auslan. All interpreters employed by Expression Australia are certified by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).
Auslan interpreting can occur in person, or remotely via Video Remote Interpreting (VRI). Click here to learn more about our VRI service.
What is Deafblind interpreting?
Auslan interpreters adjust their communication to suit an individual's communication needs. For people who are deaf and blind, this may include changing the signing space and the use of haptics.
Many of our Auslan interpreters specialise in Deafblind interpreting. There are two main methods of interpreting for Deafblind people; tactile interpreting and visual frame interpreting.
Tactile interpreting involves the Deafblind person placing their hands over the interpreter’s hands and reading the signs through touch and movement.
Visual frame interpreting is used when a Deafblind person has some vision. The interpreter will adjust the signing space and the speed to suit the client.
What is a Deaf interpreter?
A Deaf interpreter is a language specialist and interpreter who is Deaf. This interpreter works together with an Auslan interpreter to facilitate communication. Deaf interpreters are skilled in transferring meaning between Auslan and other signed or visual communication.
A Deaf interpreter may work with:
- a deaf person from another country who uses a sign language other than Auslan
- a child or young person who does not have fully developed Auslan or English
- a person whose language is affected by trauma or significant mental illness
- a person whose language is impacted by an intellectual disability
